The colorful Spanish phrase, “boca de ratones,” gave rise to the city’s name. First populated by Calusa Indians, Boca Raton also attracted settlers who traveled here from the Carolinas and Georgia. In the 1920’s, the notable Palm Beach architect, Addison Mizner, purchased thousands of acres after visiting Boca Raton. He intended to develop the area into a new Venice, Italy.

Pink tower in Boca Raton
The influence of Mizner’s unique style of architecture can be seen throughout the city. His Moorish style, somewhere between elegant Georgian and Venetian architecture, has been, and continues to be, replicated in construction. This gives the city of Boca Raton a unified aesthetic appeal. Light pastels are the predominate colors used, especially the pink tints that were Mizner’s preferred shade.
The magnificent Mizner-designed pink-towered Boca Raton Resort & Club, built in 1926 is one of the nations premier resorts and one of the city’s most famous landmarks. The resort presides over a sublime stretch of Boca Raton’s two-mile-long beach front. Probably the most sought-after Boca real estate location, accommodates the most discerning buyer requirements.
